Depression, anxiety, fear, and anger can interfere with a sense of being alive or just being able to function at an optimal level. These experiences are the result of interruptions in the development of the self. Psychotherapy, as I practice it, offers an opportunity to resume self development without past obstacles. New experiences and new solutions to old problems emerge. Psychotherapy promotes a connection and an emotional attachment to a therapist whose main purpose is to create a healing non-judgmental relationship. A relationship which is guided by respect, empathy, another’s best interest and careful listening. This allows for an exploration of the connection between the past and the present and produces a deeper knowledge and understanding of one’s self and others. The ultimate goal of therapy is healing, and the growth of the self so that there is a new peace and comfort in “being yourself.”

Inquiries welcomed at 1-312-729-5310

Patricia McMahon, PsyD is a Illinois Licensed Psychologist

Member Therapist
<guid

It is useful to many people to better understand their life situations in order to set and reach personal goals, strengthen relationships, or make grounded decisions to adjust to changed life circumstances. By its structure, psychotherapy allows you to talk concerns or problems through in a secure space, and allows you to explore thoughts, feelings, and problems in a way that solitary introspection or conversations with friends and relatives often cannot achieve.

<span

There seems to be little left over to get creative or to motivate yourself to go for a walk or to take that class or to just meditate. You seem to be asking yourself constantly: “Isn’t there more to my life than mere existence?” I refer to this predicament as revolution (walking in circles) as compared to evolution (expanding your horizons). Therapy is a place to seek your direction.

Additionally, therapy is a place to explore your issues in a non-judgmental atmosphere. My objective as therapist is to be your guide and your helper as you decide what is best for yourself, at your own speed. Each persons’ odyssey is different and will therefore unfold in its own unique manner. As I tell the students’ that I supervise: “I’m not interested in making you into another me. I want you to develop your own style by building upon your own original foundation. Your path is your path”

To prepare for this role as therapist and guide, I have completed a difficult schedule of studies and supervised training experiences which has culminated in a doctorate degree in clinical psychology, a sheep skin if you will. I have, in addition, explored my own inner space, traveled and read extensively, and have achieved some sense of wisdom and self honesty which will hopefully continue to blossom and mature.

Finally, therapy for me, is the honest exchange between people. This experience is not often to be found in the “real world” where expectations and the judgments of others are ever ready to make themselves known. In therapy, you can come in and talk about anything that you want and not have to worry that you’ll be rejected, looked down upon, or ridiculed. It’s a safe place to discover more about yourself.

<a
